About Me:

Sara Namusoga–Kaale is currently a lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Communication at Makerere University, as well as the eLearning coordinator for the School of Languages, Literature and Communication. She holds a PhD in Cultural and Media Studies from the Centre of Communication, Media and Society at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), a Master of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies from Rhodes University and a Bachelor of Mass Communucation from Makerere UniversitySara teaches courses on multimedia production, digital communication, print media editing, computer aided research and reporting, and visual communication at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She is also involved in supervising research for both undergraduate and postgraduate student. 

Sara previously taught at Uganda Christian University’s (UCU) Faculty of Journalism, Media and Communication. She has also worked as online sub-editor at New Vision as well as a Hansard editor in the Pan-African and Ugandan parliaments. Her work is aligned to new media, media policy, print and digital journalism. 

In 2012, she and a team at Uganda’s parliament produced the award-winning publication, Parliament since 1962: Our story. The book was part of the activities to mark Uganda’s independence golden jubilee and records parliament’s history.

About Me:

John Baptist Imokola is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Communication, and an Andrew Mellon PhD Fellow in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. His doctoral work is on regulation of television programming in Uganda, with specific interest on local content quotas.

He has been a journalism trainer since 2008, with teaching stints at International Institute of Business and Media Studies, Nkumba University and Muteesa 1 Royal University. He has offered speeches and motivational talks to aspiring journalists, and young ones starting the profession. He has also written and presented a couple of papers about the Ugandan media.

Mr Imokola is an experienced journalist, growing through the ranks of a News Reporter, News Anchor, and News Editor, News Producer to heading two national television newsrooms in Uganda. He has worked with several local television stations, including Uganda Television (now Uganda Broadcasting Corporation), Record TV Network - Uganda, former WBS Television, NBS Television, and with occasional contribution to international networks. He has also been News Editor at Uganda Radio Network. During his journalism career, he has served as training editor at both Record Television Network - Uganda, and WBS Television.

While carrying out these tasks, he gained a lot of experience in Television Production including script writing and editing, camera work, video and audio editing, control room operations, online broadcasting, live broadcast, and media management in a Television setting.

John holds an MA in Journalism and Communication from Makerere University, and a Hons Bachelors Degree from Makerere University. But he has also attained several certificates in different fields to further his experience and training. 

He has also had consultancy stints in broadcast journalism, communication and public relations with reputable organizations in the country.

He is also involved in research work, with interests in journalism practice, media management, media and culture (especially television), audience studies, among others. He has been academic staff at the Department since February, 2012.

About Me:

Dr. Brian Semujju teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate students at Makerere University in the Department of Journalism and Communication. In addition, Brian was the Editor of the African Journal of Communication (2015-2020), a journal published by the East African Communication Association. Brian has reviewed articles for the Journal of African Media StudiesJournal of Community Informatics, and Indilinga: African Journal of Indigenous Knowledge Systems. He sits on the editorial board of the International Journal of Communication, while his own publications have appeared in journals including: Feminist Media Studies, International Communication Gazette, Communication Theory, Journal of African Media Studies, Journal of Alternative and Community Media, etc, on top of several book chapters. He is the recipient of the 2015 Best Student Presentation medal of the World Conference on Media and Mass Communication. His academic focus is on Communication Theory. His research projects currently focus on Communicating Science and Digital literacy.

GRANT 1: Using Video Jockeys (VJs) To Promote Public Engagement and Awareness of Makerere University Science.

Project Summary

The project seeks to communicate science to the rest of Uganda by interpreting Makerere University science discoveries using TV documentaries, translated in local languages (Acholi, Runyankore, Ateso, Lugbara, and Luganda). We are using some of the most popular VJs in each region.

GRANT 2: Evaluating digital literacy to create a policy for digital media use at Makerere University.

Summary of the project

The project attempts to understand the nature and distribution of digital literacy in terms of gender and courses in all the sampled colleges, and the major challenges hindering digital literacy at Makerere University. The focus is specifically on: digital awareness, digital access, digital ethics awareness, digital content creation, and digital content evaluation. The study is being done at Makerere University using a selected sample of both students and staff in colleges.

GRANT 3: Digital Literacy in East Africa: A three country comparative study

Project Summary

The study consists of a cross-national survey conducted in Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, focusing on demographics, audience trust in various media platforms and media literacy/digital content evaluation via measures testing respondents’ believability of true and false social media posts.

About Me:

Robert Madoi Nasaba holds a Masters of Arts degree in Media and Public Relations from Newcastle University as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Makerere University. Robert has engaged with professionals within the media sector and academia. He has worked for some of Uganda’s top media houses, starting out as a reporter before working his way to the position of editor. His experience in journalism practice has straddled the print, broadcast and online arenas. He also lectured public relations modules at Uganda Christian University (Mukono) from 2009 to 2012. His teaching interests are in the areas of journalism practice and theory, professional ethics, political economy of the media, media industries, conflict and crisis reporting, sociology of news production, impact of new media and public relations.

About Me:

Gerald Walulya is a Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Communication, Makerere University. He holds a PhD in Political Communication from the University of Oslo, Norway. His teaching areas include, Public Affairs Reporting, News Writing, Reporting and Production, Media Management, Public Relations Writing and the Art of Public Speaking. His research interests include political communication and journalism. Some of his most recent research has appeared in The Journal of Media and Communication and in books published by Routledge and IGI Global. Gerald is currently working on research that focuses on analysing and interpreting former Ugandan President, Idi Amin’s photographs funded by Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and another one focusing on the economic effects of COVID-19 on media houses in Uganda and Ethiopia.

About Me:

Prof. NASSANGA Goretti Linda is a Professor at the Journalism & Communication Department, Makerere University and was the first Head of the Department. She has had a long experience in the media, starting off as a journalist in 1980, moved into training in 1992 and is currently a lecturer and researcher. Her areas of expertise & research include: development communication; women & media; community media; environment/climate communication; media ethics, policy & regulation; global communication; population & health communication; new media and ICT; and peace journalism. She has carried out research in several areas relating to the media and has been a consultant to national, regional and international projects. She has published in international and local journals and has edited a book on media and globalization in the East Africa region.

Wilson Akiiki Kaija is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Communication, Makerere University. He has previously worked as a Senior Journalism Trainer and Mentor for the BBC Media Action; and directed programming at Kyoga Veritas Radio in Soroti. He is a hands-on journalist with specific interest in online journalism. Marjorie N. Kyomuhendo holds a Master of Philosophy in Media Studies (Media, Democracy and Development) from the University of Oslo, Norway and a Bachelors of Mass Communication from Makerere University, Uganda. She has certified training in Communication for Development from Mount Carmel International Training Center, Israel; Behavior Change Communication from Stellenbosch University and John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and AfriComNet /C-Change -Ohio University.

Marjorie is currently a PhD CARTA Fellow undertaking a collaborative doctoral training program in public and population health (specializing in Health Communication) at Makerere University in conjunction with CARTA member institutions http://www.cartafrica.org/ Her doctoral research involves investigating the effectiveness of communication interventions in increasing positive male engagement in maternal reproductive health so as to increase the uptake of family planning in Uganda

Prior to joining academia, Marjorie worked as a freelance reporter with the New Vision newspaper and later as a Research Assistant with the Department of Journalism and Communication, Makerere University. She has experience providing technical and professional advice in strategic communication to different government, private and development organizations including USAID/Regional Center for Quality of Health Care, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Government of Uganda, CDC/PEPFAR, USAID/ AIDS Integrated Model District Programme; RUFORUM, World Vision Uganda, International Aids Vaccine Initiative; International, AfriComNet and Sida.

She is a member of the African Network for Strategic Communication in Health and Development (AfriComNet) and Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU).
Her research interests include strategic communication for behavior /social change in health, communication for development, public relations and organizational communications.

Harriet Sebaana is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and communication. She is an expert in media and communication, specializing in the area of public relations and strategic communication.Her research interests are in Strategic communication,  Public relations and journalism/media training. She has taught public relations and Strategic communication at Makerere since 2005 up to date . She is a fellow of the Salzburg (Austria) academy on global media and democracy of 2008. She has over 10 years’ experience as academic and researcher. Much of Sebaana’s current research focuses on corporate communication, integrated marketing communication with a special interest in analysis of corporate social responsibility framework that can best explain how telecommunications companies engage in maternal health. She is a member of African network for Strategic communication in health and Development (AfriComNet) and alumnus of Salzburg Global Seminar on media and Global Change.

Charlotte is a lecturer and internship coordinator at the Department of Journalism and Communication. She is highly skilled in the fields of journalism and communication, including writing for all aspects of communication, editing and research. Her teaching and research interests include: public journalism; media, war and conflict reporting; peace journalism; and crisis communication. She has a PhD. in Media and Communication from the University of Oslo, a Master of Science in Media and Communication from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a Bachelor of Mass Communication from Makerere University. Charlotte has a combined 25 years’ experience in journalism (reporting, writing and editing), communication in the development context, teaching, research, and academic supervision. She has previously served in senior editorial roles in some of the leading newspapers in Uganda, and has worked with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Uganda as a communication specialist in the areas of strategic communication, humanitarian coordination, and crisis prevention and recovery. Charlotte has also served the Department as coordinator of the DANIDA-funded annual Uganda Investigative Journalism Awards administered by the Department and the East African Media Institute (EAMI), as programs coordinator, and as Masters coordinator. She has undertaken consultancy assignments with various national and international organizations.
