The newly re-designed Journalism and Communication department and student websites are slated to be launched at the end this month, October, on a date the department has not confirmed as yet. In October 2013, the department received a funding amounting to shs. 10.4 million From the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur InternationaleZusammenarbeit (GIZ), a German Cooperation, to support several multi-media activities including the hiring of a consultant to revamp the department and student websites.

This fund was part of the greater grant of shs. 99 million from GIZ to facilitate various department activities. The re-vamped websites are www.jocom.mak.ac.ug and journalism.mak.ac.ug for the department and students accordingly.

According to the acting Chair of the Department of Journalism and Communication, William Tayebwa, other projects that were facilitated is the 2013 Annual media Convention that was held at Fairway, and an on-going book project “media for children and young people”.

Tayebwa said the purpose of re-designing of the department websites was to transform them into contemporary multi-media websites.

“The students’ website is a platform that functions as a news platform. It is designed for students to contribute both broadcast and print content. It is a very responsive media,” Tayebwa said.

According to the students’ website Chief editor, Clare Muhindo, this is a very important platform for students to put into practice what they learn in class.

“Students should submit their stories and make our site active. It is a very responsive practicing tool,” Muhindo said.
