Makerere University`s only professor of Journalism and Communication, Prof. Goretti Linda Nassanga, has received the highly coveted Media Life time achievement award in recognitionof her outstanding contribution to Uganda’s media industry. The award ceremony was organized by the Media Challenge Initiative, at Kampala Serena hotel on 10th December 2017. The visibly overjoyed Prof. Nassanga elegantly walked to the podium and received this recognition amidst cheers from fellow members of Staff, students and media personalities.
“I thank God that I have been recognized and appreciated when I am still alive. This is a big honor and a motivation to work harder,” she said in the acceptance speech.
Professor Nassanga referred to the recognition as a pleasant surprise. In previous years, this recognition has focused on practicing journalists and producers. “Previously, the focus has not been on academia, but this year is an exception. I am humbled to be a recipient,” she added with a smile.
The CEO of Media Challenge Initiative, Abbasi Mpindi, referred to Prof. Nassanga as a distinguished scholar who has contributed greatly to the development of the Uganda Journalism industry. “This award recognizes media personalities with an outstanding record and accomplished career in Journalism in Uganda,” he noted.
Mpindi further explained that recipients of the award are writers or presenters who have an impeccable track record and are undoubtedly role models to aspiring media practitioners/journalists.
Professor Nassanga has been a pioneer achiever in various fields. She is the first PhD graduate and professor at the Department ofJournalism and Communication, Makerere University. In 1998 when the then Mass Communication Department became autonomous, she was its first Head. In her 15 years of teaching, Prof. Nassanga has been inspired by the need to add to the growing body of knowledge in Journalism through research and publication. As a result, this illustrious Professor is widely published in high ranking journals, books and articles at both local and international levels.
Prof. Nassanga is a founder member of Uganda Media Women Association and is the Coordinator of the Africa Council of Communication. She now joins the list of distinguished scholars who have received this prestigious Media Life time achievement award like Joel Kibazo- a public relations manager based in England, John Nagenda- a presidential advisor, Andrew Mwenda of the independent magazine and the late NTV news anchor, Rose Mary Nankabirwa.
