The Uganda Press Photo Award Is Now Open for Entries

Photographers have up to August 31st to submit their work in order to be considered for the Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA). The award ceremony will take place in October at the Makerere art gallery and is organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda (FCAU) together with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

The winner of the Uganda Press Photo of the Year Award will receive a brand new Nikon D7000 camera, while the best picture in each of the six subcategories will also be awarded. The categories are: News, Daily Life, Sports, Nature, Portraits and Story.

Registration can be done online via www.fcau.org and is open to all Ugandans of 18 years and above. Almost 100 photographers applied for the 2012 edition of the UPPA, during which Daniel Edyegu (freelance with New Vision) was awarded with the main trophy.

Entries are judged by a professional jury representing all areas of the industry. Among them are experienced news photo editors Carl De Souza (Agence France Presse) and Thomas Mukoya (Thomson Reuters), as well as photography curator Katrin Peters-Klaphake and renowned Kenyan photojournalist Boniface Mwangi.
The FCAU was set up in 2011 and represents not only foreigners but also Ugandans who report for international news agencies. It is committed to contributing to a lively journalism sector in Uganda, and this photojournalism award forms an important pillar of that commitment. The awards are sponsored by the United States Mission in Uganda, Aqua Sipi, Fotogenix and Definition Africa.
