DJC Staff support their own to acquire new motorbike

It was a happy afternoon on 6th June 2017 at the Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC) when a section of Staff gathered to witness the handover of a motorcycle to the lab technician Tonny Luggya. The Chair of this Department, Dr. William Tayeebwa, handed over the brand new TVS Star X motorbike to Luggya amidst cheers from Staff. Luggya, a laboratory attendant at the Department, lost his motorbike (model 100BM- Boxer), on a fateful 1st March 2017 when an unidentified thief stole it from the parking area at Lincoln flats- Makerere University. One of the DJC computer laboratories is at these flats and it is here that Luggya’s office is located. He reported the incident to the Makerere University Police station, and investigations are still ongoing.

In addition, Luggya shared his plight with members of Staff at the Department. They mobilised individual contributions to a tune of 1.2m (one million two hundred thousand shillings) for the purchase of another motorbike. Luggya managed to raise the other funds to purchase the motorbike at a cost of 3.8m (three million eight hundred thousand) shillings. With this generous contribution, Luggya feels indebted. ‘I thank the members of Staff for bailing me out. I have been so grounded without this motorbike because some of my work involves moving in different corners of the university. I am indebted to the Department,” he said with a smile.

“My new bike is one of the most admired on the market. It is a strong machine and is very comfortable. When riding it, I feel like flying,” added a beaming Luggya.

Dr. Tayeebwa, thanked the Staff for their contributions describing it as a true spirit of team work synonymous with the Department. He called upon the University Management to enhance security around the university. “Security is obviously a university-wide problem. We have seen several comments on webmail. It just shows how important it is for us to mobilise and get resources to build that University wall through the convocation office. The university is currently very porous and this certainly calls for vigilance from us all,” he said.

DJC Staff congratulated Luggya upon his acquisition and vowed to continue the team work in good and bad times.
