The Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC) at Makerere University held its Annual Finalist Dinner on 19th May at Metropole Hotel, Kololo to bid farewell to students who have completed the four-year bachelors’ programme.
The event was graced by Hon. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, an alumnus of the Department and Member of Parliament Kyadondo South. He emphasized that the journalism profession highly rides on passion and this should not be lost to upcoming practitioners.
The dinner was preceded by a panel discussion on Key issues arising from the new technological changes in the media environment. The panellists were: Peter Kaujju of Kampala Capital City Authority, Cathy Adengo of Stanbic bank, Francis Kagolo of New Vision, Gerald Busingye and Wilson Kaija of DJC. Andrew Mwenda was one of the discussants. The panel recognised the increasing use of new technology in journalism, public relations and corporate affairs, adding that this is not about to change. They cautioned that issues of credibility remain thorny, especially on social media, and that journalists ought to verify information before passing it on. Students weighed in on the topic and were more in support of use of new media as opposed to traditional main stream media.
John Baptist Imokola, who represented the Chair of DJC, highlighted the department’s vison and openness to partnerships/collaborations. At the event, students showcased and exhibited some of their works. They also awarded outstanding students and lecturers, with Gerald Busingye scopping overall outstanding lecturer. The event was sponsored by the Parliament of Uganda, Bank of Uganda, Africell, Stanbic bank, Nile Breweries, Media Challenge Initiative, Ambience and Makerere University.
