About Me:

Fred Kakooza is a Lecturer of Journalism and Communication at Makerere University. His doctoral research in 2015 focused on social media and HIV/AIDS prevention among young people in Uganda funded by the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED). Out of this research, Dr. Kakooza has authored a book chapter on social media and HIV/AIDS prevention in Uganda in a book on HIV/AIDS in Uganda (in press), edited by Dr. James Kiwanuka-Tondo. Within the same research area, Dr. Kakooza has co-authored a paper titled “Social media for communicating health information: Constraints and practical suggestions for developing countries” in the Health & New Media Research Journal. Dr Kakooza has also  co-authored a journal article titled: "Female Journalists: Negotiating safety and security risks in the Ugandan media environment" in the East African Journal of Communication. Dr. Kakooza has presented papers at a number of annual conferences including the East African Communication Association (EACA), the South African Communication Association (SACOMM) and the Norwegian annual Conference on the Safety of Journalists. He is a 2019 Norhed Post-Doc Fellow. Dr. Kakooza holds a doctorate in cultural and media studies from the University of KwaZulu - Natal, a Masters in Journalism and Communication and a Bachelors degree in Mass Communication (Hons) from Makerere University. His masters study investigated ‘the influence of business priorities on content in the broadcast media situated in the political economy of the media.
