According to Dr. Aisha Sembatya Nakiwala, Government needs to prioritise the humanities when addressing societal needs because they enable us to look at the social aspects of almost everything. For example by communicating knowledge from other disciplines, people will partake, accept and use this knowledge to support and implement national policies and plans

Annual Media Convention 3rd May 2021

The Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC) at Makerere University has for the last 23 years hosted an Annual Media Convention (AMC). This event brings together academia and industry players to discuss the latest trends affecting the field of journalism and communication. This year’s AMC will coincide with celebrations to mark the World Press Freedom Day on 3 rd May 2021, which will be held under the theme, “Information as a Public Good”.

Students' photo exhibition

The student photo exhibition is a result of a partnership between Uganda Press Photo Award and the Department of Journalism and Communication to tackle the development of photojournalism and visual literacy within the department. 
 
This has been a year long project supported by Culture atWork and the European Union to: 
support the teaching and training of photojournalism; 
provide students with critical thinking, visual literacy and research techniques
deepen  technical and practical understanding  of photography.

DR. NAKIWALA TAKES OVER FROM DR. TAYEEBWA AS HEAD OF JOURNALISM AND COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT

Makerere University has appointed Dr. Aisha Nakiwala Sembatya as the new head of the Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC).

 Dr. Aisha Nakiwala takes over from Dr. William Tayeebwa who has been the head since 2014.                                                                  The handover ceremony took place on Thursday 1 October at Makerere Guest House.

Dear Friends, today 1st october 2020, the Department of Journalism and Communication, Makerere University, has bid farewell to Dr. William Tayeebwa as Chair and welcomed Dr. Aisha Nakiwala Sembatya. Two Journalists killed weekly - New UNESCO Global report- Makerere University

At least two journalists are killed every week, according to a newly released UNESCO global report.

The UNESCO World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development 2017/2018 report indicates that between 2012 -2016 over 530 journalists were killed.

 The report on World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development was launched at Makerere University on 14th March 2018.

The report indicates that there are growing attacks on journalists and continued legal restrictions including criminal laws.
